The first Olympic Games in London took place in 1908 and were the fourth modern Summer Olympic Games.

These Olympics were the first to have a contest for the host city. The winning bid was from Rome ahead of London, Berlin and Milan. However in 1906 Rome had to abandon their hosting commitment when Mount Vesuvius erupted causing reconstruction expenses in Naples to be required as a priority. London took their place at short notice.
